After a waterfall-filled Day 2, it was only fitting that Day 3 began with yet another stunning cascade—because when you’re in Iceland, waterfalls are never far away. In fact, some estimates suggest there are over 10,000 waterfalls scattered across the country (and no, that’s not a typo!). While it would take a lifetime to visit them all, we set out to experience the most iconic and awe-inspiring ones during our 9-day adventure.
Our first stop of the day was the enchanting Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, one of Iceland’s most photographed natural wonders—and it’s easy to see why. Cascading 60 meters (197 feet) from ancient sea cliffs, the waterfall creates a mesmerizing curtain of water that seems straight out of a storybook. What makes Seljalandsfoss truly unique, though, is the walking path that circles behind the falls, offering a rare and unforgettable perspective from inside the waterfall’s misty veil.
As we made our way behind the roaring sheet of water, sunlight filtered through the spray, creating shimmering rainbows that danced across the rocks. Surrounded by lush green meadows and wide-open skies, the moment felt both surreal and peaceful. The thundering sound of water, the chill in the air, and the panoramic views of the Icelandic countryside all combined to make this a magical, immersive experience—definitely one of the highlights of our trip.
Iceland’s waterfalls never fail to impress, but Skógafoss truly stood out as one of the most awe-inspiring stops on our journey. As we approached, we were immediately struck by the thunderous roar of the water plunging 60 meters (197 feet) straight down into the river below. The immense spray created a veil of mist that wrapped around us, adding a crisp coolness to the air and often painting the scene with vibrant rainbows on sunny days.
Surrounded by lush green cliffs and wide open sky, the setting felt like something out of a fantasy film. We took on the challenge of climbing the steep staircase beside the falls, and the reward was more than worth it. From the top, we were treated to panoramic views of the Skógá River as it wound its way through the rugged landscape, offering a different perspective on the waterfall’s power and scale.
The sheer force of nature on display at Skógafoss, combined with its striking beauty, made this visit a definite highlightof our Icelandic adventure. It’s one of those places that stays with you long after you've left.
As we journeyed deeper into Iceland’s wild and untamed landscapes, the Green Mountains began to rise dramatically in the distance—an awe-inspiring sight that felt both surreal and serene. Draped in vibrant moss and rich vegetation, these mountains stood in stark contrast to the dark volcanic earth and brooding skies above. The sunlight filtered through shifting clouds, casting a constantly changing palette of greens, golds, and deep shadows that made the scenery feel alive and dreamlike.
These ancient peaks, shaped over millennia by volcanic eruptions and sculpted by glacial movement, hold a raw, untamed beauty. Mist curled lazily around their summits, adding a sense of mystery to their already dramatic presence. Around every bend in the road, the view transformed—revealing rugged ridgelines, hidden valleys, and sweeping panoramas that looked like something from a fantasy world.
Driving through this part of Iceland felt less like traveling through a country and more like wandering through a painting brought to life—one where nature has taken its time to perfect every detail.
Have you ever stood on a beach where the sand is as black as night? Visiting Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach was a first for us—and an experience that felt both surreal and unforgettable. Even on a cold and rainy day, the beach’s haunting beauty took our breath away. The deep black volcanic sand stretched along the shoreline, creating a stunning contrast against the foaming white waves that crashed rhythmically onto the coast.
What truly set Reynisfjara apart were the towering basalt columns, perfectly geometric and rising like ancient sentinels from the earth. Nearby, jagged sea stacks known as Reynisdrangar pierced the horizon, shrouded in mist and legend. The dramatic cliffs and the wild, untamed ocean added to the sense that we had stepped into another world—one where nature still holds all the power.
Despite the chill and drizzle, we wandered the beach for hours, captivated by the otherworldly landscape and the sheer force of the sea. It wasn’t just a stop on our itinerary—it was a moment that etched itself into memory, reminding us of Iceland’s raw and mystical allure.
